What is Free Image to Text (OCR) Online?

Image to Text (OCR) extracts printed text from images using the Tesseract OCR engine, which runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) converts the pixels in an image into machine-readable text. It can handle screenshots, scanned documents, photos of signs, and any image containing visible text. Supporting over 100 languages, it's useful for digitizing printed documents, extracting text from screenshots, or making the content of images searchable.

How it works

Tesseract 5 (tesseract.js) runs in the browser via WebAssembly. The image is preprocessed (grayscale, contrast adjustment) to improve recognition accuracy, then passed to Tesseract which analyzes connected components, identifies word shapes, and matches them against its language model. The selected language pack determines which characters Tesseract recognizes.
